Beyond the title: Who I am

My name is Letho Nkosi, and I’m from a small location in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga. I am currently the Site Manager at two Roadgrass sites, based primarily at Site Thabang. Growing up, I always had a love for learning and teaching. I studied Agricultural Sciences and initially dreamed of becoming an educator. But when that plan faded, I embraced my second passion—agriculture—and I couldn’t be happier with the path I chose.

Before joining Roadgrass, I was a student at Tshwane University of Technology, studying Animal Protection. In 2020, I began my practical work at Roadgrass as part of my course requirements. My life as a student was typical—studying, learning, and figuring out my place in the world—but I could never have imagined how much my journey here would shape me.

My roadgrass chapter

My first few weeks at Roadgrass were overwhelming. I knew the theory behind animal care, but seeing the production line in action was an entirely different experience. I was a student learning the ropes, but soon I transitioned into a full-time worker and eventually became a manager. The journey from student to manager has been intense, challenging, and immensely rewarding.

What drew me in wasn’t just the work—it was the sense of family. From day one, I felt welcomed and part of something bigger than myself. Roadgrass isn’t just a workplace; it’s a home where every day brings new challenges, learning opportunities, and moments of triumph.

Growth & transformation

What I enjoy most about my work is the challenges that each production cycle brings. Every day is different, and every day pushes me to problem-solve, think creatively, and lead with purpose. Through Roadgrass, I’ve discovered my own capabilities. I’ve faced situations that I once thought I couldn’t handle—but I’ve grown, adapted, and thrived. I’ve learned that there is no limit to what I can achieve if I put my mind to it and remain focused on the outcome.

The people & the culture

The culture at Roadgrass is unlike any other. From the moment you step onto the farm, you feel the warmth and welcome—it’s like being home. There are no outsiders here; everyone is treated as part of the family. Management, students, and workers all contribute equally. We work together, eat together, and celebrate our successes together.

My General Manager, Marsha, has had the biggest influence on my journey. She guided me from being a student to a permanent employee and now a manager. She taught me everything from the basics of managing people to how to handle difficult situations with patience and calm. Her mentorship has been invaluable—a motherly, guiding presence that I continue to rely on.

I’ve also learned from the family that owns Roadgrass. Thabang taught me the importance of being one with your workers; they feel welcome when you work alongside them. Molly and Lerato have shown me the meaning of love in leadership—they trust us, believe in us, and give us the space to excel without micromanagement.

Personal connection & impact

Roadgrass is more than a job—it’s home. Living and working here feels like being part of one big family, and it has given me a sense of belonging that I cherish. I want to leave a legacy of teamwork, love, and unity. I want everyone who comes after me to feel the same warmth and familial connection that I have experienced. Maximising results together, supporting each other, and nurturing this family spirit is the legacy I aim to uphold.

Looking ahead

The thing that keeps me here, even on hard days, is hope. I know that challenges are temporary, and that perseverance leads to triumph. Even when situations are tough, I focus on the light at the end of the tunnel and the joyful days that lie ahead. My vision for the future is to continue fostering this culture of collaboration, dedication, and love—ensuring that Roadgrass remains a place where people thrive and achieve their full potential.

Roadgrass can be summed up in three words: Love. Teamwork. Enjoyment

Every day here is an opportunity to grow, connect, and make a difference—for the farm, for the team, and for myself. This is more than a workplace; it’s a family, and I am proud to be a part of it.

My voice

If I could speak directly to anyone reading my story, I’d say: believe in yourself, embrace challenges, and trust the process. Life will test you, but you are capable of more than you think. A typical day on the farm starts early. I wake up, head to work, and check the production environment for the birds. I interact with my team, delegate tasks, and ensure that every process is running smoothly. We work hard, we celebrate our successes, and we support each other through every challenge.
